The Mounts of the Palm: What Each Means, from Venus to the Moon
It is not only the lines of the palm that are read. Below the fingers and along the edges of the palm there are gently raised, cushioned areas, which palmistry calls mounts. In the old tradition each mount is named after a planet, and each is linked to certain qualities of its own.
Reading the mounts is easy: you only need to see which areas are full and raised, and which are flat. In this article we look at all seven mounts, one by one.
How to look at the mounts
Open your palm flat, hold it in the light and tilt it slightly as you look. The raised areas show up clearly in the play of light and shadow. You can also press gently with your thumb to feel which areas are full and cushioned.
Tradition takes the most raised mount to be your ruling mount. Its qualities are said to show most strongly in your nature.
The Mount of Venus: below the thumb
The large, rounded pad below the thumb, circled by the life line, is the Mount of Venus. Tradition links it to closeness, warmth, a love of beautiful things and enjoying life. A full Mount of Venus is linked to a nature that likes being among people and showing affection openly.
The Mount of Jupiter: below the index finger
The pad below the index finger is called the Mount of Jupiter, also known as the Guru mount. Tradition links it to leadership, self-respect, high goals and the wish to guide others.
The Mount of Saturn: below the middle finger
The Mount of Saturn sits below the middle finger. On most palms this area is not very raised, and that is quite common. Tradition links it to seriousness, patience, responsibility and deep thinking.
The Mount of the Sun: below the ring finger
The pad below the ring finger is the Mount of the Sun. Tradition links it to creativity, an appreciation of art, warmth and the wish to bring some shine to your work. The sun line runs up towards this very mount.
The Mount of Mercury: below the little finger
The Mount of Mercury sits below the little finger. Tradition links it to a gift for conversation, quick wit, curiosity and picking up new things fast. The marriage lines also appear near this mount, on the edge of the palm.
The Mount of Mars: courage in two places
In tradition, the Mount of Mars is found in two places on the palm. One lies between the thumb and the index finger, just inside where the life line begins; the other is on the outer edge of the palm, between the Mount of Mercury and the Mount of the Moon. The inner one is linked to courage and taking the first step, and the outer one to patience and holding your ground.
The Mount of the Moon: on the lower edge of the palm
On the little finger’s side, just above the wrist, the raised area is the Mount of the Moon. Tradition links it to imagination, sensitivity, intuition and an interest in stories, music or travel. A head line that slopes downwards runs towards this very mount.
The fingers are read too
In tradition each mount is tied to its own finger: the index finger to Jupiter, the middle finger to Saturn, the ring finger to the Sun and the little finger to Mercury. So along with a mount, the length and straightness of its finger are noticed as well. For instance, if a long, straight index finger comes with a full Mount of Jupiter, tradition links this to a clearer interest in leadership.
Keep in mind while reading the mounts
- A flat mount is no shortcoming. In tradition it simply means that quality does not come forward in your nature as much as others do.
- The mounts are named after planets, but reading them gives no planetary periods and no events to come.
- A mount is read together with the lines and the shape of the hand. A mount alone does not tell the whole story.
- The shape of the palm changes with age and work, so the mounts too can change a little over time.
In the end
Find the fullest mount on your palm and see which qualities tradition links it to. Do they match you? Sometimes two mounts are equally raised, and then tradition reads the qualities of both together. It is a simple way to see your own nature from a new angle.
