The Marriage Line: How Tradition Reads Close Bonds in It
Below the little finger, on the outer edge of the palm and above the heart line, you will see one or more short lines running across. These are called marriage lines. Some people also call them relationship lines, and that is the sense in which we read them in this article.
According to tradition, these lines are linked to deep attachment and close relationships: how much closeness means to you, and how much it matters to you to give your whole heart to the people you are close to. These bonds can be of love, of friendship or of family. These lines are found on almost every palm, whether or not there is a relationship in your life.
Where to look for the marriage line
Bend your palm a little and look at the edge on the little finger’s side. Below the finger and above the heart line, the short lines coming in from the edge towards the palm are the marriage lines. They show up more clearly when you curl your hand slightly, as if making a loose fist.
These lines are short, so they often look faint in a photo. With good light, and with the edge of the palm in the frame, they are easier to read.
What tradition reads in them
Tradition links the length, depth and number of these lines to certain shades of temperament:
- One long, clear line: This is linked to deep attachment and a habit of giving your whole heart to your relationships.
- A short line: This is linked to holding your feelings a little in reserve and opening up slowly in relationships.
- Several short lines: Tradition links these to a nature for whom many close people matter: friends, family and loved ones.
- A deep line: This is linked to valuing trust and long-standing bonds in relationships.
Faint lines and fine branches
Sometimes these lines look very faint, or fine branches come off them. Tradition links faint lines to attachments that are close to your heart but not shown to everyone. A branch rising towards the little finger is linked to warmth and sharing closeness in relationships. These are shades of temperament, not signs of any event.
The myth of counts and timing
The most common belief about the marriage line is that the number of lines is the number of marriages, or that the age of marrying can be worked out from where the line sits. We do not read it that way, and the idea is not one to rely on. Neither the number of lines nor their position can tell whether a wedding will take place, when, or how many times.
The relationships in a life are shaped by your own choices, your circumstances and the people you meet. No line decides them in advance.
With the heart line and the Mount of Venus
In tradition the marriage line is never read on its own. The heart line shows how feelings are expressed, the Mount of Venus below the thumb shows closeness and warmth, and the marriage lines point to how much deep relationships matter. Only by putting all three together does tradition say anything.
For example, when a heart line curving upwards, a full Mount of Venus and a clear marriage line all appear together, tradition links this to an open heart and warmth in relationships.
Love and marriage are two different things
In palmistry, love is mostly read from the heart line. The marriage line may be named after marriage, but tradition sees the depth of relationships in it. So do not take the two to be the same thing.
People who live single keep deep bonds too, and for some, friendship is the closest bond of all. All of these matter just as much.
What the marriage line does not tell
- Whether a wedding will take place, or when.
- Who a relationship will be with, or what it will be like.
- Whether a relationship will last or not.
- Any number or date to do with your family.
Make big decisions about relationships with your own judgement and by talking to people you trust, not by relying on a line.
In the end
Read your marriage line as a gentle question: which relationships are closest to you, and how do you look after them? What tradition says is only a hint. The real story is in your relationships, not in your palm.
